Pump House Hero
May is Historic Preservation Month, and in honor of the occasion, I would like to post about the Cheyenne pump house. As a member of Historic Cheyenne Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to educating citizens about historic structures and sites within our community, I created a "sizzle reel," as I sometimes refer to it, about the history of the pump house. I titled it Pump House Hero and sent it to city council, the mayor, and various other local organizations. Ther

Crown of Leaves
In honor of Women's History Month, The Cheyenne Creativity Center is showcasing the art of local artists in a show titled, Silhouette: Women in Art and as Artists . As a representation of my artistic journey so far, I chose a self portrait that I painted 22 years ago. It was an assignment for an oil painting class during my junior year at CSU. The requirements involved using a palette knife in the construction of a self portrait. Up until this point, I had some experienc

Forever, Light
In 2008, I was inspired by a Bathtub Madonna, which are shrines created for the Madonna out of old clawfoot tubs. I went to the thrift store and bought a small TV for five dollars. I hollowed it out, gilded it, and fitted it with a small Jesus night-light on the inside that was given to me by my artist friend Mario, who was also experimenting with reclaimed art themes. A few years went by, and my old Mitsubishi TV stopped working. After the enjoyable experience of making m

Make a Wish
I have two works exhibited throughout September for the Arts Cheyenne ArtHaus mobile gallery. My style fits perfectly within this month's theme: Plein Air. There is another part of my style that fits in with themes of today: Reclamation. I often work on reclaimed surfaces, like architectural salvage, so today provided a unique opportunity for my art to fit into a larger background: Finding beauty in the lost and forgotten. Today, ArtHaus was parked at the dedication of th

Plein Air at Colorado National Monument
Painting on Window Rock is my favorite spot. The ravens fly overhead and I swear they recognize me by now. The juniper trees are ancient, and this one was happy to be painted. Not all the trees on Window Rock have such a fabulous view...maybe that's why this one is so joyous.

Saw Blade Commission
I was commissioned to paint three saw blades. Now relics, these antique saw blades were once very useful tools on the old ranch. The owner wanted to pass them on as individual works of art to her three children. For the first, I was to create a simple landscape of Devil's Tower, Wyoming's famous natural monument. For the second, the client requested Sundance Mountain to be in the background with the old family barn, two family collie dogs, and butterflies to symbolize her

Sunflower Mural at Mountain Phoenix
I had the pleasure of creating this Sunflower mural on behalf of the Morgan family, for the kindergarten class at Mountain Phoenix Community School in Wheat Ridge, CO. It is painted with enamel on reclaimed pressed tin and is located in the outdoor play area. Sunflowers are native to North America and have been cultivated for centuries by the earliest peoples of these lands. Each sunflower is as unique as the little learners playing around it!

Vintage Sign Repaint
I was commissioned by Flydragon Design in Cheyenne to repaint this cool old sign. The building used to be a liquor store called The Fix n' Mix. The owner/artist of Flydragon wanted to keep the ghost lettering of the original business. A new specially cut metal sign is intended to be affixed on top of the ghost lettering. The refreshed look will only incorporate the words "Drive In" from the old sign. This commission was definitely challenging due to the time constraints,

Rise of the Phoenix
I painted this for the Hope for Human Trafficking Victims art show at Flydragon Art Studio. It's sponsored by Zonta club of Cheyenne and focuses on bringing awareness to the human sex trafficking crisis happening in the U.S. and around the world. The Phoenix is symbolic for rebirth. The survivors of sex trafficking know better than anyone what it means to rise above the ashes and take flight ablaze with courage. https://www.flydragondesign.com/content/hope-human-traffickin
